Healthy Dark Chocolate Donuts

jump to recipe

I’ve been realllllyyy into breakfast foods lately — most of it is because it’s the only time I have to myself in the mornings and I love being able to serve my family with nutritious (and delicious) food to start the day. And maybe I let me bananas go bad before eating them — but who’s the real winner here when we got dark chocolate donuts that are sugar free AND delicious? These dark chocolate donuts are baked with some added flax seed for protein and a delicious (not sugar free) glaze for the top — sprinkles added by your favorite 3 year old who definitely endorses them — need further proof? Look below!

For these donuts, you’ll need a silicon (or metal) donut pan, but you could honestly also make them as muffins if you don’t have one. They’re super simple to make — just mix the wet ingredients together. Then, in a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients together. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix well. Fold in the chocolate chips, and then bake for 10 minutes at 350.

Once they’re done baking (10-12 minutes, when a toothpick comes out clean), let them cool for about 10 more minutes. After that, they should easily come out of the pan (why I love silicon molds so much!!). Mix the chocolate glaze ingredients together & dip the top of the donuts into it. If you love yourself, or just have an excited toddler, be sure to add your favorite sprinkles! It’s a super fun way to get them involved too — which always promotes eating!

Healthy Dark Chocolate Donuts

20 minutes - serves 6

3 small or 2 large ripe bananas

3 tbs honey

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

1/4 cup milk

1/2 cup all purpose flour

2 TBS ground flax seed

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp cinnamon

Pinch of salt

1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

Chocolate glaze

1/3 cup powdered sugar

2 tbs cocoa

2-3 tbs milk

Pinch of salt

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (or 195 degrees Celsius).

  2. Mix together the bananas, honey, egg, vanilla, milk.

  3. In a separate bowl, mix together the dry ingredients: flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt.

  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir well (if your dough is too thick, add a little more milk). Fold in the chocolate chips (you could also substitute your favorite nut, sprinkle, or even white chocolate chips).

  5. Spoon dough into donut mold (if using a metal pan, be sure to spray with non-stick spray before adding the dough) and bake for 10 - 12 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

  6. While donuts are baking, make the glaze by mixing all ingredients together, stirring well.

  7. Let donuts cool for 10 minutes before removing from the mold. Dip the donut into the glaze and top with sprinkles before the glaze sets.

  8. Enjoy with a glass of cold milk or coffee!
